Three new studies with AusFarm

November 12th, 2024

.. from 3 different labs across New South Wales:

Muhuddin Anwar and co-authors have published a study in European Journal of Agronomy of the effects of climate change on mixed farming systems at two locations in inland NSW.

The take-home messages:

  • (rainfall changes – which are highly uncertain – will be the key driver of climate change impacts, and
  • canola looks to be more sensitive than other components of these farming systems
Amy Bates and co-authors how examined the advantages and disadvantages of increasing the supplementary feed provided to breeding ewes in Animal Production Science.

Take-home message:

  • more supplement will increase expected profit (at prevailing prices) but in some regions it entails additional financial risk
Warwick Badgery and co-authors have published a study in Field Crops Research of a hardy perennial (if you’ll forgive the pun): the place of C4 perennial grasses in the farming systems of the uniform-rainfall parts of NSW.

Take-home message:

  • C4 grasses have most value in drier environments, where persuading perennials of any kind to persist is hardest.
